Contract, permanent or contract-to-perm? Choosing the right engagement model

Each engagement model suits a different kind of need. A simple way to decide which one fits your role, budget and timeline.

Key takeaways

  • Permanent suits long-term capability; contract suits defined projects and urgent gaps.
  • Contract-to-perm lets both sides test the fit before committing.
  • Whole-team (SOW) engagements make sense when you're buying an outcome, not hours.

Start with the need, not the model

Most hiring decisions start with "we need a person". A better starting point is "what do we need done, for how long, and how sure are we about it?" The answers point to the right model.

Permanent recruitment

Choose permanent recruitment when the skill is core to your business and you'll need it for years — a head of security, a platform lead, a senior engineer who will grow with the team.

  • Best for: long-term capability, leadership roles, building culture.
  • Watch out for: longer notice periods — senior candidates often need four weeks or more before they can start.

Contract and day-rate staffing

Choose contract staffing when the work has a clear end date, when you need specialist skills for a project, or when you can't wait for a permanent hire. According to Hays, 60% of employers engage contractors to access specialist skills for project work.

  • Best for: projects, peak workloads, urgent gaps, niche skills you won't need forever.
  • Watch out for: knowledge walking out the door — plan handover from the start.

Contract-to-permanent

Contract-to-permanent starts as a contract with an agreed path to a permanent offer. It's a good middle ground when you're confident about the need but want to see the person in your environment first — or when budget approval for a permanent headcount is still in progress.

When you need a team, not a person

If you're buying an outcome — a migration, a platform build, a service desk — a project or SOW delivery team or an offshore or hybrid pod can be simpler than hiring individuals. You agree deliverables and governance; the provider handles resourcing.

A quick decision guide

  • Need it for more than 18 months and it's core to the business? Permanent.
  • Need it for a defined project or right now? Contract.
  • Need it long-term but want to test the fit? Contract-to-perm.
  • Need a result delivered by a team? Project / SOW team or delivery pod.
